EDITORIAL PORTRAITURE

Rodrigo Gaya Villar is a Miami-based editorial and portrait photographer whose work has appeared in WWD, Harper's Bazaar, The New York Times Style Magazine: México, The Art News, Art Fluent, Fraction Magazine, Interview Magazine, and Ocean Drive Magazine. Clients include Nahmias, Sporty & Rich, Sony Music Miami, YoungArts, Paycom, and the Miami Design District. Twenty years, over 1,000 commissions, and a portfolio built on assignment rather than in a studio.

Light, Subject, Moment

His editorial approach centers on natural light, decisive moments, and an instinct for personality, whether shooting fashion campaigns, brand activations, cultural institutions, or press portraits. Most sittings happen on location and under time pressure. A subject gives you fifteen minutes between meetings, a venue has one window with usable light, a designer is available only during install. The work is built around reading those conditions quickly and producing a frame that looks considered rather than rushed.

The result is portraiture that holds up in print. Editors get files that run at full page without falling apart, subjects get images that look like them on their best day, and publicists get something they are willing to circulate.

Assignment work

Editorial portraits for magazines, newspapers, and digital publications · Fashion editorials and lookbooks · Brand campaign imagery and activations · Artist, designer, and founder portraits · Press portraits and publicity stills · Cultural institution features and profiles · Lifestyle and hospitality editorial · Album and press imagery for musicians

Coverage runs from a single portrait sitting to multi day productions with hair, makeup, styling, and location scouting. Rodrigo works solo when the situation calls for it and assembles a crew when it does not.

Editorial photographer in Miami

Miami is a working city for editorial photography and a difficult one. The light is strong and unforgiving, the interiors are glass, and the schedule is dictated by whoever flew in that week. Two decades here means knowing which locations work at which hour, which venues will grant access on short notice, and how to shoot a subject at two in the afternoon in July without it looking like a mistake.

Regular work across Miami Beach, the Design District, Wynwood, Little Havana, Little Haiti, Brickell, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables. Assignments also cover Art Basel Miami Beach, Miami Art Week, Miami Music Week, Swim Week, Design Miami, and Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.
