ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH
Dec, 3 2024
Art fair booth documentation of MAHKU at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, presented by Carmo Johnson Projects in the Positions sector at the Miami Beach Convention Center, December 6-8, 2024. MAHKU, the Movimento dos Artistas Huni Kuin, is an Indigenous artist collective from Acre, Brazil, in the Amazon region of northwestern Brazil near the Peruvian border. Their vibrant, large-scale paintings give visual form to Huni Kuin oral traditions, sacred ayahuasca chants, and ancestral myths, functioning simultaneously as cultural documentation and political action. The collective's Art Basel Miami Beach presentation followed a landmark façade installation at the 60th Venice Biennale, where MAHKU transformed the exterior of the Giardini building with imagery rooted in Huni Kuin cosmology.
Carmo Johnson Projects, the São Paulo-based gallery representing the collective, brought new paintings to Miami under the program title "Sell Painting, Buy Land," reflecting MAHKU's practice of directing art sales toward the purchase and protection of Indigenous territory in the Amazon.
Rodrigo Gaya Villar documented the booth for Carmo Johnson Projects during Art Basel Miami Beach 2024.
